That evening, Sabrina did not lie in bed. She lit a candle and crept silently toward the kitchen.
“Ugh, I’m starving. Why do we only get vegetables? I’ll just heat these up… Oh! Beef, chicken… and red wine! I knew it. Only the chapel servants get peace of mind and proper food.”
After making herself a hearty meal, Sabrina let out a deep sigh and prepared to head back.
Suddenly, she heard two sets of footsteps approaching one after another.
Sabrina hid behind a shelf and listened:
“Gabriel, we have to do it. The temple has ordered it. There’s no choice.”
“But this means everyone will die!”
“We won’t be any different.”
They continued walking, their voices fading into the distance.
Sabrina quietly grabbed a large piece of prosciutto, then slipped back to her bedroom.
Leaning against the bedside, Sabrina finally began to ponder those terrifying words.
First, she had to escape. But how? Should she take someone with her, or flee alone?
Second, where could she go? As an ordinary town girl, she knew nowhere beyond the town.
Third, what would happen if she was discovered?
